Pasadena Museum of California Art

The Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA) is proud to present Los Angeles painter Annie Lapin’s Parallel Deliria Iteration, which the artist describes as “a never ending painting in three dimensions.”  The installation is comprised of recycled components from previous installations, discarded works from Lapin’s studio practice, and new elements added in response to the architecture of the PMCA Project Room.  The exhibit will be on display May 31 – September 20, 2009.

The visual impact of the resulting installation is, like her paintings, marked with the artist’s internal struggle to break free of the constraints of the spatial limitation inherent in the act of painting.  This project, conceived by Lapin as a way to sublimate her desires to paint in space and without conclusion, traces the limitations of the medium, while attempting to subsume the architectural space of the room.

Parallel Deliria Iteration quite literally immerses the viewer in one of Lapin’s paintings.  Surrounded on all sides by the artist’s swirling painterly vocabulary, with its unstable imagery, the viewer becomes aware of his or her own participation in the artistic ritual, as he or she struggles to find meaning amidst a morass of visual information and detritus from the artistic process.

Annie Lapin graduated from Yale University with a BA in 2001 and obtained an MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2007.  In 2008, she had solo exhibitions at Angles Gallery, Santa Monica, where she is represented, and at Grand Arts in Kansas City, Missouri.  She was also recently included in group exhibitions at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, the Las Vegas Art Museum, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), and in the L.A. Weekly Annual Biennial.” She was selected as one of the artists in “Young at Art: 15 Artists Under 35” by Art Ltd. and she will be in Rogue Wave 09 at L.A. Louver, Venice, CA. and at Margini Art Contemporanea, Massa, Italy.
