The Langham Launches Cooking Classes for Adults and Children
Adult classes in September and October include shopping with Chef de Cuisine Loren Lawe

The Langham, Huntington Hotel & Spa is pleased to announce its schedule for Cooking Classes in 2008.  Beginning July 12, classes will take place on the second Saturday of each month for adults and the third Saturday of each month for children. In September and October, the adult classes will feature special “Shopping with the Chef” field trips to the new Whole Foods Market in Pasadena where participants will learn shopping tips and techniques from Chef de Cuisine Loren Lawe and then return to the kitchen at The Langham, Huntington Hotel & Spa to prepare the fresh foods they have chosen.

Adult Classes

Chef Lawe will lead the series of adult cooking classes which include demonstration, hands-on cooking by participants and a three-course lunch paired with exquisite wines. Each class will reflect Chef Lawe’s cooking philosophy, highlighting simplicity of presentation and flavor using the finest seasonal products available in the local area. Sommelier Mathew Lathan will also discuss the featured wines and explain how each compliments the course with which it is paired.

2008 Class Themes and Dates:

  • July 12 – Summer Produce
  • August 9 – Local Seafood
  • September 13 – From the Orient – Shopping with the Chef
  • October 11 – Pumpkin & Squash – Shopping with the Chef
  • November 8 – Holiday Ideas

As host and instructor, Chef Lawe will guide the class through the art of planning, preparation and presentation of a three-course lunch.  Each class is $125 per person plus tax and gratuity, and includes the two-hour kitchen instruction, a three-course lunch paired with wine, recipes of the dishes prepared in class and a Cooking with the Masters apron. Classes are limited to 12 people and begin at 10:30 a.m.; “Shopping with the Chef” classes begin at 9:30 a.m. For reservations, please call (626) 568-3900.

Children’s Classes

Pastry Chef John Quinn will lead the series of children’s classes, teaching kids between the ages of seven and 12 to become Pastry Chefs for the day and explore the culinary world in the kitchen at The Langham, Huntington Hotel & Spa. Chef Quinn will begin each class with a kitchen tour and safety lesson and then teach the young aspiring chefs the art of recipe preparation, baking techniques and pastry presentation.

  • August 16 – Cobblers and More
  • September 20 – Apple Pie
  • October 18 – Halloween Treats
  • November 15 – Gingerbread Houses

“We want to build confidence in children who have an interest in cooking and provide encouragement for them to pursue a career in the culinary field,” said Chef Quinn. “And, more importantly, we want children to see that cooking is a lot of fun.” Classes are limited to 12 children and begin at 10:00 a.m. the third Saturday each month starting July 19.
