Tuesday, August 26 | 4:40 pm

Cynthia Olivo, most recently the associate director of Admissions and Student Recruitment at California State University, San Bernardino, has been named the new associate dean of Counseling and Student Success Services at Pasadena City College.

At CSUSB, Olivo provided leadership to the Admissions and Student Recruitment department, including the direct supervision of 30 professional staff members and 25 paraprofessionals from 2001 to 2008. While managing a large budget, overseeing counseling services activities, and developing K-14 outreach programs, Olivo represented the department to community organizations and designed marketing efforts to promote CSUSB to the community.

"I want to move the Counseling and Student Success area forward to enhance the quality services that are provided to students," Olivo said. "It will take the efforts of all the staff members in the various departments I oversee to ensure students continue to receive the quality service they deserve."

Her professional service and affiliations include: the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities; UDSA Hispanic Serving Institution National Program, president of the Association of Latino Faculty, Staff & Students, CSUSB; and a member of the selection committee for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. She also served as the executive director of the Inland Empire Future Leaders program.

A third generation Mexican-American, Olivo grew up in San Jacinto, Ca. Raised with a large extended family of 130 people, Olivo was the first to attend college. She received her bachelor's degree in psychology from the CSUSB in 1997, and her master's degree in educational counseling and guidance in 2001, also from CSUSB. She is currently working on her doctorate in philosophy, education, and urban leadership at Claremont Graduate University.

Olivo's experience with leadership, community outreach, and dynamic vision will be a valuable asset to PCC.

"The California Community Colleges provide the most student access to education and I found that very attractive when I decided to apply at PCC," Olivo said. "It is a place where I can make a difference."
