The Pasadena POPS had a mystery to solve: a violin had been stolen. Thank goodness someone in the audience had a replacement! And so began the POPS’ second installment in their 2006 series entitled “Musical Mystery Tour.” Amidst the beauty that is Descanso Gardens, patrons were treated to movie scores and symphonies. Although varied each piece held a common thread: a mystery.
Cate Caplin and Gary Franco captivated the audience with their creative and graceful dancing during “The Pink Panther”, “The Unanswered Question”, Theme from “Batman”, and “Slaughter on Tenth Avenue”. Guest saxophonist Doug Masek added a mournful quality to the themes of the films “A Place in the Sun” and “Taxi Driver.” Actress Tippi Hedren treated patrons to an insight into the workings of Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herrmann, while
collaborating on the movie “Marnie”. Baritone Roberto Perlas Gomez also lent his voice to “Behold, I Tell You a Mystery,” “The Trumpet Shall Sound,” and “Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life.” All the while, Maestro Rachael Worby kept the audience informed and enlightened about the upcoming musical pieces.
