Black History Celebrated with Parade, Festival

Pasadena's 26th annual Black History Parade marched down Fair Oaks Ave. Saturday morning and segued into an afternoon family festival in Robinson Park.

Hundreds of onlookers watched the parade as it rolled along under clear blue skies. Floats, drill teams, marching bands and notable guests in classic cars were featured.

A family festival started at noon and featured live music, food, and a black history exhibition.

The day's community grand marshal was Nettie Pigge, who has been a dedicated employee of Pasadena Unified School District since 1964. 

She started her career as an aide at Jackson Elementary School , patrolling the grounds and providing a safe environment for the children.  She has been a campus security guard at John Muir High School since 1974.

For the past 26 years the city of Pasadena has taken the leading role in organizing Black History Month activities.  Major sponsors are the Pasadena Human Services and Recreation Department, Jackie Robinson Center, Wells Fargo Bank, Miller Brewing Company, United Healthcare, Safeco Insurance and Wescom Credit Union.
