Caltech biologist Frances Arnold was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, said a spokesperson in a news statement.
Arnold, elected for using biology, genetics and bioengineering to benefit life sciences and industry, is Caltech's Dick and Barbara Dickinson Professor of Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry, said Caltech spokesperson Kathy Svitil.
According to Caltech, Arnold is considered a pioneer in "breeding" molecules such as proteins that can withstand nonnatural environments.
Arnold's election to the organization founded by Congress in 1863 brings the number of Caltech members to 75 faculty members and three trustees, Svitil said.
