Arnold’s Fine Jewelry, First Stop for Three Generations of Bling Seekers

The first stop for more than three generations of bling seekers has been Pasadena’s longest, family-owned jewelry store, Arnold’s Fine Jewelry, the go-to source for all things colorful, elegant, contemporary, glittering, bejeweled, desired and treasured since 1910.

“All sorts of pretty things,” owner Bruce Arnold said of the shop’s offerings.

A certified gemologist and member of the American Gem Society, he began working side-by-side his father at the store in the mid 1970s. He eventually bought the business when his father retired and now leads three generations of staff members.

The company started in 1890 when Bruce’s grandfather C.O. Arnold opened his first store in Ottumwa, Iowa, where he sold jewelry and musical instruments from a two-story building. C.O. moved his family to Pasadena around 1910 and set up shop in a storefront near the present-day Mi Piace restaurant in Old Town. Three more moves landed the store in its current location in the Colonnade at 350 South Lake Avenue, across the street from Macy’s.

Customers come to Arnold’s Fine Jewelry for its many services – unique jewelry selection, original design, repair, appraisal and consignment.
“The things in our showcase, a lot of what we make, you can’t get anywhere else, so there is the rarity factor,” Bruce said. “We do a great deal of custom manufacturing. My staff knows what they are doing and customers are very comfortable working with them.”

Generations of families have sought Arnold’s Fine Jewelry’s expertise for life’s important moments.  Staff members help customers select unique gift ideas for any occasion—anniversary, graduation, new baby, birthday and other celebrations.

Though the store showcases the work of many featured designers, some customers seek the fine skills of Arnold’s own designers to create one-of-a-kind pieces.

Arnold’s Fine Jewelry’s specialists repair all types of contemporary and vintage jewelry, including all types of watches, from Citizen to Patek Philippe.

The company’s complete appraisal service includes photographic records as well as a full description and valuation of each item. Stone setting and gem-stone replacement services are also offered.

The Consignment Department is particularly busy. “People inherit something they don’t want and we try to find a new home for it,” Bruce said.

Customer service goes a long way at Arnold’s, as this recommendation on its Facebook page shows:

“I’ve had the pleasure of dealing with this business only via email, they have assisted me in making purchases for my best friend, even though I live in Australia and my friend in Pasadena. Friendly and so helpful. I can’t recommend them highly enough! Try them for yourself!”
Since 1910, one factor has been the overriding factor in Arnold’s Fine Jewelry continuing success: Trust.

“Our customers trust us and they leave us things to repair that often have a huge emotional and sentimental value,” said Bruce Arnold. “The trust factor is huge in my industry.”
