Computer Networking: Always Important for Business

Getting your office computers set up so they work together as one and share all of the assets you have put your hard earned money into is one of the most important things to consider when starting, or upgrading, your business.

If you’re unsure what computer networking is, it simply means connecting each device so that they can share data with each other. Rick Khan from Micro Trends explains that each computer does this by connecting to the internet simultaneously.

In order to set up a fully functioning network, you need a router, switch, and, of course, your computers. As well as connecting to the internet, the router, says Rick, gives each computer a specific number. This is known as the IP address.

It also works to send and receive information from each computer and controls which computer receives which email, for example. How? By using another device called a switch.

This sends information to the place that it needs to be. While routers only come with four plug-in ports, Rick says that you can buy additional switches if you need to connect more than four computers or devices. You can find more about this here:

If you have several employees using computers at the same time, internet speeds can be pretty slow. In order to avoid this problem, buy a switch with a gigabit speed. (If you don’t know where to get one of these from, Micro Trends can give you the lowdown.)
