If going to fashion school has been on your mind for a while now, read on. It’s daunting to get immersed in a whole new field, but when you know what to expect, it gets less scary, right?

This is why we sought the help of owner of Italian Fashion School Angela Zdelar and asked her about her introductory class, which incidentally, is her favorite class in the school!

Going to fashion school doesn’t mean whipping up masterpieces right away. You are given time to learn the fundamental lessons that will form the foundation of your fashion school knowledge. In this case, the Italian Fashion School holds introductory classes that will teach you the basics of taking body measurements and making patterns.

Zdelar explains, “We start from the very basic. They start with taking measurements which is a very important thing, and from there, they move on to making their very first pattern. After they are done making a pattern, they make a sample…It makes the class very fun.”

“We start with very basic but move on really quickly until [we get to the] more advance stuff,” she adds.

Patterns don’t have be complicated, Zdelar assures. “It doesn’t always have to be some complicated pattern to make a garment special. Many times there are simple patterns but the fabrics make them look special.”

Eventually, new students will learn pattern layout and cutting, sewing techniques, and techniques used by tailors before graduating on to more advanced courses.

If you have a job or have a tight schedule, don’t worry. Classes are flexible. “They can get a class whenever suits their schedule. Each class is an hour long, [it depends on] how many hours they can fulfill,” Zdelar says. “It depends on people’s schedule. Our schedule is flexible. Many of our students can come Friday afternoon.”

The minimum course hours is 100 hours, and the complete course will take 400 hours. “In those 400 hours, they would really learn to make a complete ladies’ wear,” Zdelar.

Don’t be intimidated by your dream! Start the right way and you’ll reach your goal in no time.
