Do You Know Your Labor Laws?

Admit it: You’ve seen those labor law posters in every break room at every job you’ve ever had. But have you ever read them?

It pays to know these things, so you can easily identify any infringements of your rights.

Employment law covers the rights and duties between employers and workers. These rules were primarily made to make sure that workers are treated fairly. Wage and hour violations, no overtime pay, work discrimination, and sexual harassment are just some of the common disputes that employment law is protecting you from.

Some areas covered by employment law are Collective Bargaining that consists of negotiations between employer and groups of employees to determine the conditions of employment, Employment Discrimination, Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), Unemployment Compensation, Pensions, Workplace Safety, and Worker’s Compensation.

While the Employment Law seems employee-centric, it protects the employers as well.

It’s important to take the time to learn about these laws. Everything from inappropriate nicknames, asking a worker to clock out early but keep working, to a consistently hostile work environment are covered. If you feel something isn’t right at your workplace, your Human Resources representative should be willing to help.

If, however, you are met with resistance from your employer and you feel you have a legitimate grievance that isn’t being acknowledged, you might need to consider a lawyer.
