Family Building Options for Same Sex Couples

HRC Fertility, located in Pasadena, is dedicated to helping the gay and lesbian community achieve their dreams of parenthood while offering a wide range of options for all types of families, regardless of marital status or sexual orientation.
Below are some options available to lesbian couples. A few important decisions to consider are where the egg and sperm will come from, and do you wish to have a genetic and/or carrier (of the pregnancy) role.

• IVF (in vitro fertilization) uses eggs from either or both partners or donor eggs, which are then fertilized in the IVF laboratory by sperm. The sperm can be from an anonymous donor at a sperm bank or can also come from a sperm donor known by the couple.

• IUI (intrauterine insemination) uses anonymous sperm from a sperm bank or sperm donated by someone the couple knows, which is placed into the uterus where fertilization takes place.

• One, or both partners can choose to carry a pregnancy or a surrogate may also be selected.

For gay male couples, the process is a little more complex requiring both an egg donor and a surrogate. Additionally, there’s the question of who will provide the sperm. Both partners? One partner? Or, perhaps a donor? The egg donor can be anonymous by working with a donor agency, or perhaps a known donor willing to provide eggs.

The legal process is crucial in establishing custody status as well as surrogacy and donor contracts. All reputable agencies who work with donors and surrogates will walk clients through this process.

HRC Fertility-Pasadena has been working with donors, surrogates, and agencies since 1988 and has a well known and respected 3rd party parenting program. As laws in some countries do not allow surrogacy or egg donation, patients travel from around the world to HRC Pasadena for their treatment.
