The Kensington Sierra Madre, an assisted living and memory care residence that serves the San Gabriel Valley, recently celebrated its fourth , visitors were able to see the different features and amenities at the state-of-the-art residence, and meet some of the people who work everyday to make sure that the needs of its elderly residents are taken care of.

This month, The Kensington Sierra Madre continues hosting a Caregiver Support Group meeting, as well as one for the Parkinson’s Support Group, which will happen on Thursday, May 16.

These support group meetings are recurring events, according to the facility’s calendar. The Caregiver Support Group meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month, while the Parkinson’s Support Group meets on the third Thursday each month.

The residence is part of a small chain of retirement and assisted-living facilities spread over a handful of states, including two other facilities in Redwood City and in Redondo Beach, which was just completed and is set to open this summer.

Steve Sciurba. Community Outreach Director at The Kensington Sierra Madre, said the residence offers assisted-living and memory care services for the elderly.

“We have two ‘neighborhoods’ for memory care: we have early-stage to medium-stage, which we call Connections, and we have medium- to late-stage of dementia, which we call Haven,” Sciurba said.

Both of these “neighborhoods” offer cozy environments where residents can feel comfortable and secure, with each “neighborhood” accommodating needs that are specific to different stages of disease progression.

The facility is able to maintain a care ratio that is unique among most assisted-living residences in the region.

“In assisted living we have a care ratio of one to eight or one to seven, depending on the acuity of the resident, and when we get to memory care, we have a one-to-five ratio,” Sciurba said. “So we have one person to five of our residents, which is a great ratio for this industry.”

For residents, the facility has a cinema room on the premises which shows two movies a day. Residents also have a cocktail hour at 4 p.m. daily, before dinner that is prepared by a gourmet chef, Sciurba said.

“Also on site, we have a physical therapy department where we take care of all of our residents here at the Kensington from all of our ‘neighborhoods,’” he continued. “Our nurses available 24/7 to take care of the needs of our residents.”
