Different types of influenza viruses can spread through the community during flu season. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone ages 6 months and older get the vaccine annually to protect against the most common types of influenza viruses. Even healthy children and adults can get very sick from influenza viruses.

High-risk groups susceptible to severe influenza complications include seniors ages 65 and older, pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, chronic lung disease and diabetes.
