Originally a Silverlake staple, Lark Cake Shop extended its reach to North Pasadena a few years ago to give locals a sweet fix they can’t refuse dishing out custom cakes and gourmet cupcakes with fusioned flavors, organically sourced ingredients, and topped with a modern feel on a classic treat.

Owner JohnHensley was a patron of the original Silverlake Lark Cake Shop and fell in love with the recipes while he was deep in a career as a television news producer. He decided to switch gears professionally and purchase  the beloved LA cake shop eight years ago and has since opened the second location in Pasadena.

“It’s all about the customers because these cakes revolved around these events that are so personal in someone’s life. It’s a wedding, it’s an anniversary, it’s a celebration of my mom being a year cancer-free or my child’s first birthday–all of these different milestones and you get to be a part of it,”

Lark Cake Shop does one thing different than most…it keeps the treats refrigerated and surprisingly, it’s something newcomers have to get used to.

Reason being? The ingredients are all-natural and locally sourced.

“That’s very rare if you go to a cupcake shop. These are things that would go bad quickly if we didn’t refrigerate it. The upside of that when you eat our product is that you’re not going to feel that sugar rush. That’s not what we’re all about,” explains Hensley.

Words of advice from Hensley for the cupcake lovers that want to dig in to cool temperature cupcakes? Wait just a little bit to dig in and let the ingredients become room temp.

“In an hour they’re going to be perfect,” says Hensley.

We get eggs from Sunset Ranch and our dairy (milk, buttermilk, heavy cream, butter, etc.) from Challenge Dairy, and cupcakes are made daily in-house.

Non-dairy cupcake lovers can also enjoy the two options available, the Vegan Chocolate Orange and the Vegan Boston Banana.

This light and delicious cake consists of thin chocolate or gingersnap wafer cookies layered and iced with whipped cream.

White cake filled with pastry cream and topped with fruit-infused whipped cream and a seasonal berry.

Chocolate cake, whipped cream filling, topped with chocolate mousse.

4) Red Velvet

Red velvet cake topped with cream cheese icing.

5) Carrot Cake

Carrot cake made from fresh whole carrots, and topped with cream cheese icing.
