Jazz Fridays at 1881: Too Good, But True

Wednesday, April 10, 2019 | 12:50 pm

Since owner Gail Casburn took over in June of 2017, world-class jazz musicians have been popping into 1881 Bar every Friday night.

“It’s the best jazz in LA—seriously—that you’re going to find,” said Casburn.

It can be difficult to find quality live music in a laid-back setting. 1881 Bar offers just that for no cover charge. Get two drinks and you’re good to spend your Fridays nodding your head and tapping your toes to some truly outstanding music. Tacos, too.

The musicians play from 8 to 11:30 p.m. Fridays also feature a Fernet-Branca special. If you’re really feeling the music, buy the bottle.

Excuse me?

You read that right. According to Casburn, 1881 has the oldest liquor license in Pasadena. “We can actually sell packaged liquor to go,” said Casburn.

1881 can sell you sealed bottles of beer, wine, and liquor in case you’re taking the party elsewhere or staying up late with the band. Wow.

The Jazz is overseen by renowned drummer Joel Taylor. According to AllMusic.com, Taylor has worked with Andy Summers of the Police and Bobby Kimball (to name just a very few in a long a-list  type crowd). Casburn tasked Taylor with organizing the weekly event given his connections to the industry.

He’d normally be playing this Friday, but he’s currently touring in Southeast Asia.

Instead, the Groovemeisters take his place. The four-piece band is comprised of David Marcus on guitar, Sal Marquez on trumpet, Bobby Pierce on organ, and Jon Stuart (not to be confused with the former Daily Show host) on the drums.

1881 also runs a weekly Irish music night, hosted by comedian Owen Dara. After a couple of rounds of the Jameson special, you may find yourself singing along to the tunes of the Emerald Isle. Don’t you think it’s time you fed your inner leprechaun?

Wednesdays are reggae night and the coconut rum special will be what you’re drinking. Calvin Banks & the Tellers perform. Positive vibes, mon.

Happy Hour runs from 3:30 to 6 p.m. daily. But really, just get yourself on over to 1881, seriously. Bars with great drinks and live music are few and far between in this town.

1881 Bar is located at 1881 E Washington Blvd. Visit 1881pasadena.com or call (626) 314-2077.
