Lavender, and other essential oils, have numerous health benefits that are more far reaching than many may know. According to aromatherapy (the use of essential oils from plants for healing) experts Robert and Maggie Tisserand as well as a host of scientists including René-Maurice Gattefossé, a French chemist, who discovered the healing properties of it when he applied fresh lavender to a burn caused by an accident in his lab, it has the ability to eliminate nervous tension, to relieve pain, to enhance blood circulation and to treat respiratory problems. Lavender oil can also aid in fighting acne, to help with insomnia and it even works as a natural bug repellantand an anti-itch remedy either by itself or when blended in a natural base of sweet almond or avocado oil withother essential oils including: bergamot (a bitter orange essence derived from the rind that is most widely known for its use in flavoring Earl Gray tea), clove, geranium, lemon and/or peppermint.

Traditionally, English and French lavender buds are used as the base or as a key ingredient in potpourri and the essential oil of lavender has been use in perfumes, bath and body preparations as well as candles. Today, both fresh lavender and lavender essential oil are used as a key ingredient in numerous products found on store shelves including soaps for home, body and even your pet, honey, ice cream, and tea.

When buying and using any essential oil, insure that is 100% pure and not diluted with vegetable oils and, if possible 100% organic. Do your due diligence and research the brand before you buy, and remember that essential oils do vary in price tremendously. For example, it takes more than 4,000 pounds of Bulgarian Roses to extract 1 pound of essential oils. As such, 100% pure Bulgarian Rose is quite costly and can cost as much as $75 for a 10ml bottle of essential oil. On the flip side, it takes 500 pounds of lavender flowers to distill 1½ pounds of lavender essential oil
