Learning Doesn’t Stop for Parents When Kids Fly the Nest

When the kids were little, your free time was spent taking them to amusement parks, zoos, museums, and play dates. As they got older, sports and performances filled up the family calendar.
Now that they’ve flown the coop, how will you spend your evenings?

For an evening that will stimulate conversation for days, consider a night with some of the most brilliant minds from across the globe.

The Distinguished Speaker offers a series of lectures from guests who have amazing gifts. Each speaker comes in for four nights, visiting Pasadena, Beverly Hills, Redondo Beach and Thousand Oaks.

“You have a lot more to talk about than your kids and finances on the ride home. I think as a date night it’s a really great night out,” says Kathy Winterhalder, one of the Distinguished Speaker Series founders.

Says Winterhalder of their decision to add Pasadena to the tour; “We chose Pasadena because the Pasadena Civic was such a beautiful renovated theater and we felt the Pasadena community will support a series like this. And that’s been the case.”

In the past, they have had some spectacular guests. The Distinguished Speaker has introduced such well-known people as Tony Blair, Maya Angelou and Bill Clinton. They were even honored to have the Dalai Lama speak in Pasadena. Celebrities such as Ron Howard and Robert Redford have also graced the stage, so you can expect a range of speakers from various industries and backgrounds.

The line-up this year is no different, with a mixture of intellectuals, comedians, and house-hold names. Their schedule is as follows:

Ehud Barak – Wed, October 21, 2015
John Cleese – Wed, November 11, 2015
Henry Paulson – Wed, January 13, 2016
Platon – Wed, February 10, 2016
Michio Kaku – Wed, March 16, 2016
Leon Panetta – Wed, April 13, 2016
Martha Stewart – Wed, May 11, 2016

Winterhalder has a background in marketing and her sister was originally a Hollywood Casting agent. They combined forces and talents when the two got an idea to start their own guest lecture series after attending a similar event in San Francisco. With their skill sets and some mentorship from the gentleman who ran the series up north, the two created an event that has lasted for decades.

In fact, the team is celebrating their 20th season this year and they show no sign of slowing down. That is great news for all of us in Pasadena who enjoy a very smart night out.

The Pasadena speaker is always scheduled for Wednesday evenings. If you cannot make Wednesday, then you can experience the same speakers just on another evening. Subscriptions are still available to the Series in Thousand Oaks on most Tuesdays, and Sundays at the newly added stop, Beverly Hills.

All speaker events start promptly at 8 p.m. Tickets are sold as a series and you can either choose from the full series of seven tickets and a mini- series of four tickets. Restrictions can apply.

Pasadena Civic Auditorium is located at 300 East Green Street in Pasadena. Their phone (626) 449-7362.
