The Pelletteria Italian Leather Boutique brings beautiful leather goods crafted in small Italian workrooms to Old Pasadena

In a play to genuine hand craftsmanship and artisanal quality over big-brand-label products, the Pelletteria Italian Leather Boutique opens this weekend in Old Pasadena with ranges of Italian leather ladies shoes, jackets, purses, wallets and bags and cashmere scarves.

Their secret weapon? All the stock is made in smaller Italian workrooms (many of which supply hugely famous brands like Gucci) at the direction of Pelletteria’s creative director and buyer, Bologna-bred Zhen Wang.

“What we bring to Pasadena is actually a unique experience to see all made-in-Italy products,” says co-owner Carl Solis, “unique in the sense that we know that these products are not to be found anywhere in the United States other than our store.”

“Even though [our merchandise] may not be a brand that someone is looking for, what they will find is that the brands that we do have are of the highest quality. Anyone who appreciates quality will find it in each item in our store.” says Solis.

Solis explains the leather goods in the shop are made of “the best hides and pelts available, all done by master craftsmen,” many working for firms which are hundreds of years in business.

It’s easy to sling phrases like “the best leathers” and “hand craftsmanship,” descriptions cheapened by two generations of advertising abuse. Suffice to say: when you see and feel the Real Thing, you’ll know it. (Like love.) And Pelletteria promises to offer up very Real Things.

The shop pays tribute to the European notion that true quality and skilled craftsmanship matter more than brand name; that each product’s integrity – borne from concept through execution – matter more than the fashion corporation’s label added to it.

Wang says American women are starting “to understand that 60 percent of the money they pay for a product goes to a label, not to the product itself.”

For a shop like this to succeed brilliantly, an Italian tastemaker simply must be at its creative helm. Wang, who remains an Italian citizen, holds fast to her Bolognese heritage.

Wang says the women who will love Pelletteria present themselves with sophistication and “some sort of freedom and spirit.” She says the clothing and accessories they don reveal “what type of philosophy, life philosophy” they live by.

“They want to present themselves well and they want the quality, the trends, the Italian design and the craftsmanship,” Wang says.

The shop launches this weekend. The grand opening runs from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 6 and from noon to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 7.
