The Pasadena Bead and Design Show will take over the Hilton Pasadena with hundreds of artisans, crafting classes and beading materials for sale. Although the show draws vendors from across the country, there are a number of talented local artisans who are regulars at the show. Gil, the founder and creator of Shell La Vie, spoke with us about his one-of-a-kind jewelry.
“My material of choice is seashells – [the ocean] is a lifelong love of mine,” said Gil. He grew up in the Philippines and has always been close to the ocean. His goal is to make people see seashells in a new light – as works of art and not just trinkets.
“I feel like seashells don’t get the respect they deserve in the jewelry world,” said Gil. He uses seashells and marine materials like mother-of-pearl, pearls and shell cones to create wearable art. His main method of production is wire-wrapping, which is a free-form technique that helps showcase the natural beauty of his materials.
For this show, he will be bringing a series of charms and sun catchers in addition to wearable art. “Seashells are supposed to be good luck and positive energy,” said Gil.
The Pasadena Bead and Design Show will take place on January 12-15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., It is open to the public, admission is $10 at the door and good for all four days at the Hilton Pasadena on 168 South Los Robles Avenue. Visit www.pasadenabeadanddesignshow.com for more details.
