Simply Divine Apprenticeship Program

Simply Divine Salon, Spa and Barbershop out on West Huntington Drive in Monrovia has a novel apprenticeship program that could graduate students in barbering and cosmetology in about a year and a half, and then assist them in getting their licenses, while they earn some decent income.

Owned by Keshia Bowen, Simply Divine Apprenticeship Training Center, where she also serves as Director, offers interested people the opportunity to get that real-world on-the-job training, while they work in a salon or barbershop of their choice, gain all the tools necessary to pass the California cosmetology or barbering state board exam and start a lucrative career in the beauty industry.

At the school, students attend small and intimate classes, learning through theory and practical on-the-job training “in a positive and highly motivated environment with qualified instructors that care about your success,” according to Bowen.

“We incorporate many different cosmetology and barbering companies into our curriculum to ensure a complete, diverse education to our students,” she says.

Bowen has been teaching cosmetology and barbering at local community colleges for about 18 years, and considers herself an educator stylist and salon owner who decided “it was time to train and share my knowledge with future stylists and barbers in my own classroom environment.”

Bowen’s training program is approved by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology under California’s Department of Consumer Affairs.

“The Apprenticeship program provides an exciting and unique learning experience that directly connects student to the beauty industry by providing exceptional classroom education as well as earning an income in a professional salon setting,” Bowen says. “Students sign up for the class and they come to school one day a week, and then I issue them an apprentice license. So it’s technically a school and they train behind a chair for the rest of the week.”

The apprentice program is a total of 3,200 hours behind the chair, and 220 hours in classroom theory.

“Technically, you can finish the program, if you’re working at the same time, in about 18 months,” Bowen says.

The Simply Divine program is an alternative to the traditional barbering school, where students go to class all day eight hours a day and five days a week, and finish the course in about 10 months. Bowen says her training center is one of only about 20 such schools in all of California.

Students do not need to have any previous experience in beauty skills to get into the Simply Divine Apprenticeship Program. The program focuses on the importance of their graduates getting ultimately licensed.

“A lot of people want to do hair but they don’t want to get the education that comes along with it,” Bowen says. “It’s a respected business; it’s not a fad job, so they’re trying to bring back the importance of education. It’s a great industry to be in but education is the key for me. That’s my focus.”

Simply Divine Apprenticeship Training Center is located at 319 W. Huntington Drive in Monrovia, the same address as Bowen’s Simply Divine Salon and Spa.
