The Gift of Music From the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts

Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) is primarily known for its contribution to arts and interior design—every year, interior and exterior designers are called upon to refurbish and renovate a distinguished estate that will then be shown to the public.

What some people don’t know is PSHA also champions music and the arts by actively supporting Los Angeles Philharmonic, Colburn School, Pasadena Symphony and Pops, and a multitude of other non-profit organizations. In fact, since 1948, PSHA has already awarded over $20 million in gifts and grants to such programs!

Last year, PSHA awarded $630,000 to various musical organizations, from LA Philharmonic to LA Opera, to elementary schools.

“Over time we have shifted our emphasis from exclusive support of one organization to having a greater amount of money go back to the community and one of the reasons is that, arts programs have been cut so dramatically. Not just in Southern California but across the nation,” explains Lynn Mehl, Benefit Chair for the 2015 Pasadena Showcase House of Design.

Right now, PSHA is funding three highly regarded music programs: Music Mobile, an educational music program that exposes third-grade students in San Gabriel Valley, Youth Concert at the Walt Disney aimed at exposing fourth graders to symphonic music and Instrumental Competition.

Mehl, who will be raising money for PSHA’s programs and grants, points out that the organization believes that it’s important to expose children and adults to music and the arts. “There’s significant research that suggests that early exposure to music has long term educational value,” says Mehl.

“We try to do a lot of grassroots kind of contributing. A $1000 contribution to an elementary school very often is the deciding factor of whether a program will or will not exist much the same that a $25,000 grant may really make a difference at the Pasadena Senior Center,” says Mehl.

This underscores the need for the Pasadena Showcase House to be a hit year after year. “It’s really important that we’re successful at the house because that’s where the money is [to support the cause],” Mehl concludes.
