NBC 2Bundt cakes are a particularly unique type of bake. But have you ever wondered who came up with the circular pan that brings them to life? And just what makes them so popular?

Nothing Bundt Cakes is actually a fairly recent creation, having some to life in 1997 in Las Vegas. Although bundt cakes were inspired by old Eastern European cakes, the aluminum pan used to bake the modern bundt cake was only invented in 1950 by a man named H. David Dalquist.

He created the pan for a group of Jewish women who wanted to recreate kugelhopf: a thick, ring-shaped cake. Originally called the bund pan (meaning bond in German), no one is sure when the t was added onto the end.

NBC 4Founders Debra Shwetz and Dena Tripp started Nothing Bundt Cakes simply to please their family and friends. Needless to say, thousands of other people became just as excited about the delicious cakes as they were. By using the purest ingredients, handcrafted recipes and imaginative decorations, Nothing Bundt Cakes has grown into the warm brand that it is today.

The bundt cake didn’t gain its immense popularity until the 1960s thanks to a bundt cake earning second place in the Pillsbury Bake-Off. Women began yearning to make their own, creating the need for the special pan and filling H. David Dalquist’s order books. Soon, he was creating 30,000 bundt pans every day, and in the process creating a new desert that has since become legendary.

NBC 3As for the cake recipe itself, it is believed to have derived from a European bake called gugelhupf which used fruit and nuts. This was popular among Jewish communities in Europe. However, there is no one single recipe. You can have a fruity bundt or a chocolate one if you so desire.

The cake’s defining element is instead its circular shape. It usually has grooved sides and a hole through the middle. Cakes like these are notoriously hard to decorate so are usually left plain or simply glazed or dusted with powdered sugar.

Now, the bundt cake is so popular that it is estimated that over 70 million households have a bundt pan in their kitchen, and created the need for a business like Nothing Bundt Cakes so that people who don’t have the time for creating their own can still enjoy this delicious, and unique, dessert cake.
