[Updated | Corrected | Final | 8:33 p.m. ]   An unoccupied van rolled into a support column of the carport in an apartment building in the 300 block of North Garfield Avenue about 2:42 p.m. today causing severe structural damage to the building and the displacement of four families.

City Building Department officials responded and determined the building is now structurally unsound. Four upstairs units in the structure were red-tagged, displacing the occupants, the Pasadena Fire Dept. reported.

The local American Red Cross was requested by Pasadena police to assist in relocating the displaced.

Alex Rose, Disaster Program Manager with the American Red Cross. said that as of 8:30 p.m. all the occupants of the damaged apartments had been given financial assistance by the Red Cross in order to take up temporary residence elsewhere, and in order to buy food. It is not known how long the building repairs might take, Rose said.

Rose said a total of 13 people (including at least one infant and two children) as well as a small number of pets were displaced by the accident.

Red Cross volunteers arrived about 4:15 p.m. and were on scene for hours; a second Red Cross team was dispatched when the last family finally arrived home past nightfall, he said.

The Building Dept. and the building owner are working on a plan to shore up and repair the building, the Fire Dept. reports indicate.

There were no injuries reported in the incident.
