January 1, 2019 may represent the 130th Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena but it also signifies the 100th anniversary of The Salvation Army’s participation in this international event.
For a century, The Salvation Army has gathered a group of musicians from all over the globe – the organization is in 130 countries at present – and has marched in the New Year Day’s staple. This year, in commemoration of its 100 years of performances, The Salvation Army Marching Band that will be making its way down Colorado Blvd early next week will be comprised of Salvation Army musicians from every continent on earth – except Antarctica, but we are working on that.
The Salvation Army is a global Christian movement that has been around even longer than the Tournament of Roses Parade. Founded in 1865 by William Booth, The Salvation Army has become one of the major non-profit social service organizations in the world. In 2018 alone in the United States, The Salvation Army provided more than 52 million meals, over 9 million nights of shelter and served more than 23 million men women and children with services that range from after-school programs, senior services, veteran job placement and drug and alcohol treatment and many more.
In The Salvation Army’s California South Division, where the majority of the band members hail from, The Salvation Army operates state-of-the-art homeless shelters, transitional and permanent housing for veterans and their families and serves communities from San Diego to San Luis Obispo. For more information about the band and its plans from now until day of parade, contact The Salvation Army California South Musical Director Kevin Larsson at (310) 437 – 3628.

Today, more than 20 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through the broadest array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and underprivileged children.
