A 35-year-old woman was injured when a pencil stabbed her after she fell while hiking near the Eaton Canyon Waterfalls above Altadena at about at 12:51 p.m. Monday.

The woman was airlifted from the site of the accident, Deputy Dan Paige of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Altadena Station said.

“The hiker had been in moderate distress,” Paige said. “It would take about 20 minutes to hike out from the waterfalls, and eight minutes to ride to the hospital so they determined to fly her out to save time.”

The woman, Paige said, didn’t fall from a great height, so the pencil only caused a shallow wound which nevertheless had to be treated immediately.

Paige said he wasn’t sure if the pencil was in the woman’s backpack of in her waist bag.
