Sophomore Ashley Medina placed 50th overall in the women and freshman Nathan Guzman took 50th in the men’s race at the CCCAA State Cross Country Championships held November 22 at Fresno’s Woodward Park.

Medina ran a time of 19 minutes, 33.7 seconds over the 3.1 miles course as she helped the Lancers take 17th place overall among 27 scoring teams. Fellow South Coast Conference foe Mt. San Antonio won the ’14 state team title while Southwestern runner Aminat Olowora captured the individual gold medal with her 16:59.7 time.

Medina was one of three Lancers to break the 20-minute mark as sophomore Kate Manzke hit the finish in 73rd place (19:57.3) and sophomore Edna Bailon placed 76th (19:59.7). The other PCC finishers were also sophomores in Tansica Sunkamaneevongse (125th, 20:42.4) and Marina Flores (166th, 21:48.6). A field of 197 runners took part.

Guzman was PCC’s only male qualifier for the state meet, and he ran a 21:18.9 mark over the men’s 4 mile course. The Salesian High graduate led the Lancers all season on the men’s side.

“It was a great finish for our top three women runners, especially in breaking the 20-minute mark,” said PCC head coach Armand Crespo. “Ashley, Kate and Edna had battled each other over the final few meets to see who would be the fastest Lancer. Nathan was our men’s team brightspot and he was the 20th fastest freshman in the state this year.”
