A Noise Within (ANW), announces two new board members from Pasadena, who joined their Board of Directors this fall after being nominated for positions and voted on by the full Board last spring. This fall, LA Philharmonic Association Executive Director Gail Samuel and former Mayor of Pasadena William “Bill” Joseph Bogaard join the other members of the Board, now guiding the theatre into the future.
Julia Rodriguez-Elliott said, “We are thrilled to add these two new members to the A Noise Within board. Gail Samuel has an incredible depth of knowledge about nonprofit arts being at the helm one of the largest, most important, and influential performing arts companies in the world. No one knows Pasadena or our organization better than Bill Bogaard, who was instrumental in helping us find and realize our new home – which is now already seven years old. He has been an important part of the last decade of growth that we have experienced as an organization.”
Gail Samuel currently serves as Executive Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. In this post, Samuel oversees operations at the Hollywood Bowl; programming of jazz, world music, orchestral pops and pop/rock presentations by the Association at both the Hollywood Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall; and management of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, public relations, community affairs, marketing and human resources.
Samuel’s tenure at the Los Angeles Philharmonic began 25 years ago when she joined the Orchestra Operations department. Over the course of her career she has held a variety of critical positions, most recently as Acting President and Chief Executive Officer during the search process for the new CEO. Previous positions include Chief Operating Officer, which included management of the Hollywood Bowl and the Philharmonic orchestra and concert production; and Vice President and General Manager, Philharmonic and Production, managing the orchestra as well as all concert production, touring, and media activities.
Gail Samuel studied violin and earned undergraduate degrees in music and psychology and an MBA from the University of Southern California. She has served on the Board of Councilors for the USC Thornton School of Music since 2009. Gail is married to Bill Christian. They have two sons, Sam and Orlando. Sam has appeared in a number of ANW productions including Ah, Wilderness, A Christmas Carol and A Raisin in the Sun.
Bill Bogaard is the former mayor of the City of Pasadena. He was elected in 1999 and was the first directly elected mayor for Pasadena since the 1940’s. He was the longest serving mayor in Pasadena’s history. The Mayor is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He graduated from the University of Michigan Law School after serving as a U.S. Air Force Captain in Los Angeles and Casablanca, Morocco.
In the private sector, Mayor Bogaard engaged in private law practice, handling financial transactions and mergers and acquisitions, and then served as Executive Vice President and General Counsel of First Interstate Bancorp, a financial services holding company. He has taught law at the University of Michigan and USC Law School. In 1997, the City of Pasadena granted him its highest civic recognition, the Arthur Noble Award. Mayor Bogaard has also received Loyola Marymount’s Distinguished Alumni Award.
Mayor Bogaard is married to Claire (Whalen) Bogaard and they have four children. The Bogaards have lived in Pasadena since 1971. Mayor Bogaard was instrumental in helping ANW secure the site for its permanent home in Pasadena and has remained a champion for ANW with the City of Pasadena.
