An expert on addiction rehabilitation said the number of alcohol and drug abuse cases tend to spike during the holiday season. Does Pasadena have enough recovery programs for those people suffering addiction?

Phil Allen, CEO of nonprofit alcohol and drug rehabilitation center The Pat Moore Foundation, said addicts tend to ignore their condition during holiday season to participate in the camaraderie and festivities of family gatherings, company parties and the like.

“This behavior typically results in increased drug and alcohol abuse, especially among those who are already addicts,” Allen said.

Pat Moore Foundation said studies show that there is an increase in the cases of depression, drunk driving accidents, suicide and domestic violence during the holiday period because many people are trying to cope with holiday stress.

One of the most common programs used in several addiction rehabilitaion and recovery institutions in Pasadena is the 12-step program, which first traces the cause of addiction and will later provide ways to change the behaviors of the victims.

Among the local companies that apply the program are Pasadena Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency, and the California Drug Consultants in East Walnut Street; Action Family Counseling, Inc. in East Colorado Boulevard; and Gooden Center in North El Molino Avenue.

The first step in the program is for addicts to admit that they have no control of their addictions and are willing to ask for help to recover.

Theravive California in South Pasadena also offers support groups and counselling not just for alcohol and drug abuse problems, but also for other addictions like gambling, sex and internet.

“Most people avoid seeking help until they run into trouble with the law and risk loosing their marriage and/or employment, said Dr. Craig Clark, a licensed clinical psychologist in South Pasadena. “Don’t wait that long to ask for help.”

Pasadena Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency is located at 1245 E Walnut St. Call (626) 795-9127 for more information.
