A big rig driver died after his truck flipped over up an embankment on the westbound 210 Foothill Freeway just east of the Lake Avenue offramp about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

It was not known how many vehicles were involved in the incident.

A second person who may have been in a car or pickup truck was evaluated for injuries at the scene but refused transportation to a hospital, Pasadena Fire Dept. Spokesperson Lisa Derderian said.

California Highway Patrol logs reported that Good Samaritans tried to extricate the big rig driver from the truck’s wreckage.

Records show the Pasadena Fire Dept. dispatched its Urban Search and Rescue teams to assist with extrication,

The entire freeway was shut down briefly in the wake of the accident. The Lake Avenue offramp from the westbound 210 Freeway remained closed for hours Tuesday night as investigators combed the scene and awaited the arrival of Coroner’s officials.

Pasadena police assisted with traffic control on nearby surface streets.

The driver’s identity was not immediately released by authorities.
