Amazing! A Week of Actual Rainy Weather Predicted

Published on Monday, January 9, 2017 | 6:11 am

Pasadena residents should prepare for some serious rain Monday morning that could become heavy later in the day. In fact, rain will be the main character in the weather plot for almost the whole work week, with rain chances ranging from 40 to 100 percent.
The National Weather Service attributes this to a strong cold front interacting “with a long plume of subtropical air to bring another round of rain to the area” after some showers late Sunday night.

By Monday, a Flash Flood Watch will be in effect in Pasadena and nearby areas starting at 9 a.m. up to 12 noon.

“High rainfall rates, in excess of one half inch per hour, will be possible,” the NWS said. “These rainfall rates may be intense enough to create mud and debris flows in and around the recent burn areas.”

The NWS warns Southern California residents in or below the recently burned areas to take the steps necessary to protect their property.

“Persons in the watch area should remain alert and follow directions of emergency preparedness officials,” NWS said.

Because of the rain forecasts, the Pasadena Fire Department is advising residents to “leave early and allow plenty of time to get to work/school,” and to keep a “flashlight, snacks and water in your car in case you get stranded.”

Lisa Derderian, Fire Department spokesperson, offered some standard rain precautions and advised people putting out their trash cans to put them out “a few feet from the curb as water could easily carry trash cans with it and block storm drains.

“Have tarps, mops, and the phone number of your insurance company handy if needed in a flooding emergency,” Derderian said in an email. “Don’t store canned or cleaning goods on garage floor because if it comes into contact with rainwater or in flooded conditions, can contaminate product.”

Monday will see rain before 11 a.m. that could be heavy at times, with the chance of precipitation at 100 percent. Highs will be near 62. Monday will be partly cloudy with a low around 48.

Tuesday will have a 20 percent chance of rain after 11 a.m., otherwise will be partly sunny with a high near 58.

Rain is likely Tuesday night, when the rain chance is 60 percent. Lows will be around 50.

Wednesday will see rain likely before 11 a.m., then a chance of showers after 11 a.m. The day will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 60. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent.
