Pasadena police investigators are looking into an incident inside a restaurant in the 300 block of South Lake Avenue Saturday afternoon, where a man punched an employee and threatened him with a pocket knife, and then fled after the manager intervened.

Lt. John Mercado said the incident happened at about 2:55 p.m. when a male employee, a Los Angeles resident in his late 20s, was attacked and sustained a cut and swelling to the lip when the suspect punched him in the face.

Mercado said the police department received a call regarding an assault with a deadly weapon, where a restaurant employee was the victim.

“As the employee walked into the restaurant, he began talking with a female co-worker who was preparing to get off [her work shift],” Mercado said. “It turns out the co-worker’s boyfriend was in the car in front and did not like the fact that this male is speaking to his girlfriend. So he went inside the store and punched the victim in the face. He pulled out a pocket knife and threatened him with it.”

At this point, the restaurant manager was able to intervene, Mercado said, and the suspect fled the store with his girlfriend.

Police described the suspect as male Hispanic, in his mid-20s, about five feet ten inches tall, and weighed about 175 pounds. He wore a black t-shirt and black basketball shorts.

“He was armed with a three-inch pocket knife,” Mercado said.

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspect is advised to call the Pasadena Police Department, at (626) 744-4241.
