Applications for paid internships at the Armory Center for the Arts in communications, exhibitions, or studio are now open.

These are made possible with a grant from the Getty Foundation as part of its Multicultural Undergraduate Internship program.

Candidates for internships in communications or exhibitions must be currently enrolled undergraduates and have completed at least one semester of college by June 2016. It is necessary that they are either residents or currently attending college in Los Angeles County.

These internships are intended for members of groups underrepresented in professions related to museums and the visual arts, including, but not limited to, individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander descent.

The communications intern will assist with day-to-day media production and PR tasks under the guidance of the Communications Director.

Duties include creating/updating marketing materials, such as e-newsletters, website content, social media content, signs, postcards, videos, and brochures; documenting on-site and off-site programs (video and/or photo); shooting/editing short videos; and general department support as assigned.

The ideal communications intern is one whose focus is graphic/media design. The candidate must also be proficient and efficient in Mac OS and Adobe CS and have strong design instincts, decent photography skills, can shoot and edit short videos (FinalCut or iMovie), can do moderate HTML coding using Dreamweaver, is familiar with content management systems (WordPress, etc.), and is very social media savvy (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).

The candidate must also have excellent verbal, written, and listening skills on top of a good sense of humor, positive attitude, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a high-energy office environment. A penchant for writing concise, persuasive copy for sales and marketing efforts is a plus.

The exhibitions intern will participate in the planning and implementation of contemporary art exhibitions in the Armory’s Caldwell and Mezzanine galleries as well as in locations in the community. The exhibition internship will provide an opportunity to receive training from the Armory’s exhibition program staff; gain hands-on experience in arts administration and art exhibition organization; interact with professional artists who are participating in exhibitions; and gain an understanding of and experience in the daily workings of a multi-disciplinary community-based arts organization.

Meanwhile, the ideal candidates for Studio Internship are those studying fine art, early childhood education, or a related field. Experience in customer service, childcare and working in educational settings is an advantage. They should also be  well organized, have a good attention to detail, excellent communicators, proficient in Excel and have an affinity for working with children, youth and parents.

Under the guidance of the Director of Studio Programs, the Studio Intern will assist with the daily implementation of more than 250 classes taught by the Armory’s faculty of professional artists.  These classes are offered in a variety of media and for all levels of ability for children ages 3-11, youth ages 12-18, and adults.

Among the many opportunities the selected student will receive are getting hands on experience with the Armory’s education and artistic program staff and gaining valuable experience in arts administration and arts education.

Applications will remain open until positions are filled.
