ArtCenter Fall Classes for Teens and Kids Expose Youngsters to ‘Journey of Self-Discovery’

The ArtCenter College of Design has just concluded summer classes for teens and kids and now will open fall classes on October 1 for teens in grades 9 to 12, and October 23 for kids in grades 4 to 8.

Registration for classes for teens is from August 29 to September 30, and for kids, registration opens on September 26.

Paula Goodman, Director for K-12 Programs at ArtCenter, said teens who dream of becoming an artist or designer can begin their “journey of self-discovery” at the ArtCenter for Teens, previously called Saturday High.

“We won’t just teach you how to be creative. We’ll help you strengthen your creativity, build your confidence and discover your unique voice,” Goodman says. “We’ll provide you with rich and meaningful experiences to apply art and design to master technical and conceptual skills, foster personal growth, and reach beyond the obvious. You’ll learn the ins and outs of the creative process— how to identify needs, frame problems, make choices, generate alternatives, work collaboratively and communicate your ideas with impact—all in a fun and creative learning environment.”

Goodman is also in charge of ArtCenter for Kids, which offers courses at the College’s Hillside and South campuses in Pasadena, campuses also used for teen classes.

“At ArtCenter, we believe an art and design education can improve children’s lives in many ways, from learning how to problem solve and experiment to promoting collaboration and inspiring career goals,” says Goodman. “We motivate students to express themselves in new ways and discover their sources of inspiration.”

Most of the teen fall classes will be conducted on Saturdays, three hours each from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, at the South Campus and Hillside. The courses listed for fall include graphic design, photography, figure drawing and environmental design.

A complete listing of the courses for teens is accessible online through and includes information about tuition fees and course lengths as well as course materials that may be required. Most of the courses charge $300 for tuition. Scholarships are available.

For ArtCenter for Kids courses, children in grades 4 to 8 can take abstract drawing, cartooning techniques, introduction to short film-making, painting and photography, among a host of other offerings.

ArtCenter for Kids Sunday classes meet for seven-week sessions, held Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at ArtCenter’s two Pasadena campuses. Classes are small and allow students to have personalized, one-on-one attention.
