ArtCenter Grads Present Their Visions of the Future of Car Design

Students graduating this Saturday from the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena showed what cars will look like in the decades to come, with designs ranging from a 3D-printed hydrogen turbine-powered two-seater to a mid-engine hybrid two-seater that its designer said would be “the Corvette killer.”

At Thursday night’s Grad Show, the students from any number of majors – illustration and entertainment design, to photography and sculpture, to transportation design – put out their projects for professors, fellow students and potential employers to see.

AutoWeek described many of the car designs as relating to an autonomous, robotic future, looking like “rolling comfort pods that had nothing to do with cars as we know them today,” as West Coast editor Mark Vaughn writes.

Vaughn describes one of three projects by student David Bang as “an upright, rectangular breadbox-looking thing” that had “Tesla” slathered on the side. Bang also displayed a drawing that showed the progression from today’s Model S, “morphing into a driverless future aimed at coddling and entertaining a few riders.”

Bang also designed an autonomous “Porsche 929” with a unique 1-2-2-1 seating configuration, AutoWeek says.

Student Wayne Ho’s senior projects were two sportier sedans, one branded Lexus and the other Jaguar, that could be a successor to the CX75 turbine-powered concept.

“The Lexus came out about the time of the UX,” Ho tells AutoWeek. “The UX was too wild, I wanted something a little bit toned-down but still showing their aggressive style.”

Sam Firouzbakht, who did a six-month internship at Pininfarina, showed a svelte, aerodynamic Lamborghini four-seater sedan concept he hoped would jog the Raging Bull into more aggressive design. He chose an electric powertrain for his Bull, with batteries under the floor like a Tesla and with the passengers slid forward.

It would be quite a presence on an LA freeway or an Italian Autostrada, writes Vaughn.

Charlie Angulo came up with a 2025 Alfa Romeo Vettone, which bore a resemblance to the Giulia Coupe Quadrifoglio; and a Divergent3D Astronave, a hydrogen turbine powered two-seater that look more ‘80s than 2020-ish.

“The idea was how to bring 3-D printing to the exterior of the car,” he tells AutoWeek. “Metals like titanium can be 3-D printed.”

AutoWeek’s favorite design among the Grad Show concepts was Matt Regnier’s Ford Forty Five, a mid-engine hybrid two-seater priced between the Ford GT and the Mustang, called “the Corvette killer.”

Grad Show was part of Industry Night at ArtCenter, an open house-style event at both campuses during Spring Graduation Week.

Open to alumni, industry partners and the public, the event offered guests a chance to meet ArtCenter graduates and see the ideas, concepts and projects created by the next generation of artists and designers before Saturday’s graduation.
