A 20-year-old ArtCenter student, attempted to extort money from her family with a fraudulent kidnapping attempt at a hotel in the 1400 block of E. Colorado Blvd. early Wednesday morning. according to Pasadena police.

Pasadena Police Lt. Pete Hettema said a call came in around midnight Wednesday from the woman’s mother reporting that her daughter, a Pasadena resident and student at ArtCenter, had been kidnapped.

The student’s mother, located somewhere in the U.S., said that the student’s father, located in China, had already paid a ransom of ¥500,000 (about $85,000 in U.S. currency), Hettema said.

The student’s mother reportedly received phone calls from the alleged kidnappers and was able to speak to her daughter, who claimed she was okay but that her parents needed to send money. A photo of the victim had also been sent to her mother, and it appeared that she was bound and gagged inside a hotel room, Hettema said.

Eventually, officers were able to determine the student was in a motel room in Pasadena. They went inside to check her welfare and found that she was alone and uninjured. The student eventually admitted she taken a picture of herself in an attempt to extort money from her family, according to Hettema.

According to Pasadena Police, it is currently not clear as to what she needed the money for or if anyone else was involved.

The woman, identified by police as Yimei Wang, was arrested for extortion and later released.
