Enthusiastic art and music lovers boarded shuttles at City Hall to view a city-wide variety of performances, galleries and venues

Whether it was because of the Dodgers playoff game—or a post-COVID shift in local night culture that has seen reduced weekend crowds in Pasadena—a smaller than pre-pandemic but still enthusiastic group of art and music lovers fanned out across Pasadena Friday evening for the City’s annual, twice-a-year “ArtNight” event.

The musical group “Subs” performed on the steps of City Hall Friday night as the steady stream of art and music lovers boarded a limited number of shuttle buses to visit a host of museums and galleries.

Subs were joined by the Hodis Learning & Music trio, who performed post-modern and traditional jazz. Nearby, the Pie & Burger food truck did a brisk business.

Boston Court was busy as it staged a range of music, theater, visual art, and dance events from a host of artists throughout the evening. Meanwhile, the Pasadena Conservatory of Music also presented music throughout the evening with a host of groups including the distinctive Gamelan Merdu Kumala.

“It’s a genre of ensemble instrumental music,” said a Conservatory spokesperson. “It’s traditional Indonesian music.”

Pasadena Playhouse presented a fascinating workshop on the art of improvisation, led by teaching artists from Impro theater, while ArtCenter College of Design presented “Cantos of the Sibylline Sisterhood,” with works of science fiction, fantasy, spirituality, and mythology.

Together, 20 arts organizations and performance venues presented shows, works and exhibits, all of which were arranged through partnerships with The City of Pasadena, which also provided a number of city-funded mini-workshop grants.

Fall and Spring ArtNight events are an ongoing partnership among many of the city’s cultural institutions and the Cultural Affairs Division of the City of Pasadena.

The next ArtNight is set for Spring in March of 2023.
