[Updated May 8, 2016 | 8:25 a.m.] A 17-year-old Pasadena teenager has been killed after the convertible BMW he was driving crashed at high speed into a concrete pole near the Rose Bowl and then caught fire about 2:49 a.m. Sunday.
A witness said hat the car was travelling at a high rate of speed southbound on West Drive when it crashed at Seco Street before exploding in flames.
The witness said there was only one car involved.
“The driver and sole occupant of the car sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision,” Lt. John Mercado said in statement. “He was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident by Pasadena Fire Department personnel.”
The force of the impact made the the car almost unrecognizable. One of the wheels was found in a Rose Bowl parking lot, about 100 feet away from the wreck.
Both Pasadena Police and Fire Department units are investigating.
