A cardboard box placed too close to a stovetop caused a fire of short duration in an apartments located in the 300 block of East Cordova Street in Pasadena Wednesday afternoon.

Pasadena Fire Department Battalion Chief David Watson said firefighters responded with three fire engines to a reported water flow alarm from the address, and found light smoke in the hallway of the second floor.

Firefighters later found a cardboard box on the patio already extinguished by fire sprinklers.

The alarm was activated at about 1:18 p.m. The fire was already out when units arrived about four minutes later.

Investigation revealed the cardboard box caught fire when it was placed too close to the stove in the apartment, triggering the alarm.

Watson said there was no damage to structures in the apartment but content damage was estimated to be about $7,000. No injuries were reported.

The battalion chief advised residents to keep all possible combustible items away from your stove top and electrical outlets.
