Black Lives Matter circulated this image on social media over the past three days in anticipation of Tuesday's sentencing of Jasmine Richards in Pasadena.

Jailed Black Lives Matter Pasadena Organizer Jasmine Richards faces sentencing for a felony conviction and another trial for misdemeanor charges at the Pasadena courthouse Tuesday morning.

Richards’ supporters say they are planning to “pack the court” to protest her conviction and have gathered 75,000 electronic signatures on a website to petition the judge to overturn the jury’s decision and “not sentence … Richards to any jail time.”

The group claims that late Monday, a juror in Richards’ case submitted a letter to Judge Elaine Lu requesting minimum sentencing for Richards who faces up to four years in prison.

“We are aware that there could be, potentially, some kind of demonstration, but we’re not aware that there is going to be anything that would necessitate additional law enforcement,” Lt. Tracey Ibarra said.

Pasadena police said Monday the protests are expected to be peaceful.

Richards was convicted by a jury last Thursday of attempting to unlawfully remove a suspect from police officers, formerly known in California law as “felony lynching,” during an incident last August 29 in La Pintoresca Park.

The conviction carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison. Richards’ supporters say the charge against her was politically motivated and “trumped up.”

After Superior Court Judge Eliane Lu pronounces Richards’ sentence, Richards will be taken downstairs for a another trial in connection with misdemeanor charges of making a criminal threat and disturbing the peace in one incident, and battery of a police officer and resisting arrest in a second incident.

Prosecutors said they have video of both incidents.

“We still have two open cases,” said Will Rivera. “We’re still hoping to discuss possible negotiation with the defense, and we are pursuing that.”
