Former ten-time world boxing champion and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar Dela Hoya has been charged with two misdemeanor DUI cases stemming from his arrest in Pasadena in January.
TMZ Sports reported Thursday that prosecutors are moving forward with the charges DUI and driving with a .08 blood alcohol level. Dela Hoya could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted.
TMZ said Dela Hoyas options could be to cut a deal to avoid imprisonment, and agree to alcohol education classes, AA meetings and fines and fees.
De la Hoya, 43, was pulled over at about 2 a.m. on January 25 as he drove a Land Rover on Del Mar Boulevard west of Saint John Avenue in Pasadena.
A Land Rover was seen speeding on Del Mar Boulevard west of Arroyo Boulevard with mechanical violations, a CHP statement on the arrest said. The vehicle was subsequently pulled over and the driver was advised of the reason for the stop. While speaking with the driver of the vehicle, the investigating officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from inside the vehicle.
De la Hoya failed a series of field sobriety tests that morning and was arrested for DUI.
De la Hoya, also a 1992 Olympic gold medalist, has admitted in the past he was an alcoholic and had used drugs.
He won 10 professional world titles in six weight divisions before retiring in 2008 after a loss to Manny Pacquiao.
In 2002, De La Hoya founded Golden Boy Promotions, a combat sport promotional firm. He is the first American of Mexican descent to own a national boxing promotional firm and one of the few boxers to take on promotional responsibilities while still active.
