The Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena’s Outspoken Dance Team brought home top honors from the Sharp International Las Vegas Nationals Competition over Easter weekend. The team of 9 – 13 year olds earned three First Place trophies, and a Judges Award for Most Enthusiastic Team.
The team of Pasadena youth has been dancing together since 2013, with many talented dancers over the course of six years. Specializing in Hip Hop, Jazz, and Majorette, the group prides themselves in “leaving our mark on the floor.” The Outspoken name represents inner-city dancers being able to express themselves and be heard through dance, and they’re encouraged to be Outspoken using their movement to speak for them.
Taking home the honors were:
1. Mya Bryant, 12, attends Eliot Arts Magnet Academy
2. Denise Canizales, 10, attends Washington Middle School
3. Makayla Cortez, 9, attends Jackson Elementary
4. Aa’Zauria Collins, 11, attends Eliot Arts Magnet Academy
5. Jaelynn Cooke, 13, attends Eliot Arts Magnet Academy
6. Jazmine Gonzalez, 13, attends Marshall Middle School
7. Destiny Hardin, 13, attends Rosebud Middle School
8. Kyree Johnson, 12, attends Eliot Arts Magnet Academy
9. Enija Lopez, 12, attends Eliot Arts Magnet Academy
10. Jackie Spurgeon, 10, attends Jackson Elementary
Led by Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena staff member Jasmine Fennell, the team earned First Place trophies in Elementary Jazz, Elementary Hip Hop, and Independent Jr. Hip Hop, also taking division winner trophies with the highest scores of the day in Elementary and Independent Jr. Hip Hop.
Grateful father, Raymundo Canizales, said “Thank you Outspoken familia for letting me be part of this beautiful group. I’m so proud of our perfect dancers, they’re the greatest. Don’t know how to express how grateful I am to be a part of this team!”
Along with support from their families and the Club, dance team members have raised funds over the years by selling popcorn and other items to help with competition expenses.
