Bridge Reconstruction Will Shut Down Major Residential Intersection Through February 17

Pasadena Water and Power crews will start work Wednesday on an underground electric conduit system along La Loma Road at Arroyo Blvd., which is expected to close the intersection to vehicular and pedestrian traffic for more than a week.

A notice from PWP said the crews will install the system starting February 8 and will continue construction work until February 17.

“As with any pipeline project, a variety of heavy equipment will be used, including backhoes, loaders and construction trucks,” John Orolfo, Principal Engineer at PWP, said in an email.

Orolfo said residents, visitors and business in the area could experience additional noise and dust as the construction work progresses, although “special efforts” will be taken to keep the inconveniences to a minimum.

The construction hours will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, he said.

About 200 feet west of the intersection, the iconic La Loma Bridge across the Arroyo Seco, originally constructed in 1914, remains closed to traffic as it undergoes a $16 million seismic retrofit and rehabilitation. Work on the rehabilitation started in July 2015 and was expected to have been completed in December last year. The scheduled re-opening has been reset to March.

The La Loma Bridge Project is a collaborative effort between the City of Pasadena and the California Department of Transportation or Caltrans.
