Bruce Blomstrom, Co-Founder and longtime President of the Pasadena Bioscience Collaborative Incubator, died last week from complications resulting from Parkinson’s disease. He was 80.

Blomstrom passed away June 13 near his home in San Marino, a Los Angeles Business Journal report said Wednesday, quoting family members.

Bruce Alden Blomstrom was born in Salem, Massachusetts on July 4, 1937. After graduating from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1959, he served in an MIT African Fellows program in Uganda. He then went to serve as a biomedical executive with such companies as Abbott Laboratories in Japan, South Africa and Southeast Asia; Fresenius Medical Care, Sunrise Medical, UniHealth, and Alpha Therapeutic.

Since 2004, Blomstrom served as President of the Pasadena Bioscience Collaborative, an incubator for over 20 early stage life science companies. Through his role as a member of the Board of Directors of the Southern California Biomedical Council (SoCalBio), he has been a passionate and vocal advocate for the biotechnology sector and the opportunities it poses in Greater Los Angeles.

“He single-handedly made the Pasadena Bioscience Collaborative a functional and successful incubator that put Pasadena on the biotech map,” Ahmed Enany, SoCalBio President and CEO, told the Los Angeles Business Journal. “He will be missed.”

As a member of the Pasadena Angels Inc. and through the annual SoCalBio Conference, he helped nurture and fund numerous emerging biotech companies including Infinite Biomedical Technologies, Ikona Medical Corp., Nanostream, Chemokine, and others.

He also served on the board of the USC School of Gerontology and was a member of the Pacific Council on International Policy.

Blomstrom retired in 2016.

On March 7, Blomstrom was honored by SoCalBio at The Athenaeum for his contribution to the growth of the biotech community in Pasadena and Los Angeles.

His family said a reception will be held in Blomstrom’s honor at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, at the Huntington Library, Art Collection, and Botanical Gardens, at 1151 Oxford Road in San Marino.
