In spite of this year’s late rainy season, Spring is in the air around Pasadena, at least at local cultural organizations. Tulips are in full bloom at Descanso Gardens, and Kidspace Children’s Museum in Pasadena is bringing back its Caterpillar Adoptions program starting today, giving kids in Southern California the chance to experience the magic of metamorphosis.
For $5.49 per single caterpillar, or $19.99 for a set of five, children can adopt a caterpillar and watch it grow and turn into a butterfly in weeks!
Adoptions open on Saturday, March 17. From March 31 through May 4, your kids can come back to Kidspace Museum to release their butterflies into nature. A daily Butterfly Exploration at 11:45 a.m. welcomes kids to learn about the life of a butterfly, before they and their families join in releasing their butterflies.
Families returning with adult butterflies during Butterfly Season will receive $3 off admission for up to four guests.
If you need help building your “chrysalis carrier,” your butterfly’s temporary habitat before release, Kidspace will have a Pop-up Program each weekend in April to help. Just bring a shoebox.
Adults butterflies should only be kept in the chrysalis carrier for one to two days before release.
Butterfly Season will end with a celebration weekend on May 5 and 6. Those are extra days to learn more about butterflies and participate in ways we can support their life cycle. Kids can mold a butterfly puddler out of clay, paint butterfly scenes en plein air, or stop at Imagination Workshop to design and assemble butterfly stick kites to wave at the 2 p.m. show with a live DJ.
