Anthony Portantino for State Senate announced today the endorsement of California Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson. Superintendent Torlakson joins over 50 in district education leaders, State Controller Betty Yee and numerous institutions on board with #TeamPortantino for the upcoming State Senate race. The 25th Senate District is home to some of the most respected school districts in the State of California. It is a district where K-16 education issues dominate local community discourse, drive property values and is consistently the top concern for residents. Garnering the support of the State’s top educator is quite a coup for this race.

“Anthony Portantino has a long and deep commitment to public education in the district and is the perfect person to elect to the State Senate. Anthony is a product of public schools, is raising his family in local public schools, is also active in the PTA and many local organizations. He has my complete support and trust,’ commented Hon. Tom Torlakson, Superintendent of Public Instruction.

“I am honored to have earned the support of my good friend Tom Torlakson. A teacher and policy maker, Tom has long made educating our children his top priority while in public service. As I’ve developed productive relationships with local education leaders it’s important to have a good relationship with our State’s top education official, too. I am very pleased to have worked with Tom in the Assembly and I will endeavor to work with him on education policy if I’m blessed to go to the State Senate,” concluded Portantino.

Anthony’s institutional support includes: IBEW Local 18, ATU Local 1277, the Sheet Metal Workers, Local 105, CWA Southern California, LIUNA Local 777, UA Local 78, The Teamsters Joint Council 42, AFT Local 1521 A College Staff Guild, the California Small Business Association, the California Police Chiefs and the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs Associations, the Los Angeles County Professional Peace Officers Association, the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and the Association of Independent Commercial Producers.

Anthony is no stranger to the classroom having served as a Visiting Fellow at USC since leaving the Assembly.

Anthony is the father of two daughters, Sofia who completed her K-12 education in the district and Bella a middle school student. Ellen Portantino is currently serving as the PTA President for Bella’s middle school.
