Caltech Does it Again: Ranked Number One Small University in the World

The California Institute of Technology is still on top of the list of the World’s Best Small Universities, according to a just-released 2017 ranking by Times Higher Education, a London-based weekly magazine that reports on news and issues related to higher education.

Caltech was also number one in the 2015 to 2016 THE ranking.

The World’s Best Small Universities 2017 ranks universities with less than 5,000 students and teach and research across more than four disciplines. To be eligible for the rankings, universities must appear in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (WUR) 2016-17, teach more than four subjects, and have fewer than 5,000 students.

In the overall WUR for this year, Caltech is No. 2 in the list. Caltech has a student population of 2,181 with about 1,200 of them graduate students.

In coming up with the list, Times Higher Education heard directly from the students at some of those institutions about what they love most about attending a small college.

“For some, it was about smaller classes; for others, it was about closer relationships with teachers; and many said that a greater sense of community was the factor that clinched it for them,” the magazine reports. “Those students who studied at small universities based in larger cities said that they enjoyed the perks of a more intimate campus at the same time as enjoying the hustle and bustle of busy metropolitan life.”

Times Higher Education reports that the average number of students at an institution in the 2017 World’s Best Small Universities ranking is 3,038. In contrast, the average number of students at an institution in the THE’s main global ranking is 24,953.

“Despite its tiny size, Caltech’s rankings credentials are impressive,” the magazine says. “Not only has it managed to defend its position as the best small university in the world, but it also places at number two in the overall World University Rankings. Not bad for an institution with just over 2,000 students.”

The magazine said its rankings editor Phil Baty visited Caltech in 2014 and found that with a small student population and a small academic teaching body, the institute is able to offer “multitudinous” opportunities for impromptu meetings and discussions. Baty also found the opportunity for working across faculties is encouraged at Caltech.

Times Higher Education also said Caltech provides students “the opportunity to join a group of award-winning alumni that currently counts 34 Nobel laureates among them.”

Caltech not only offers a range of science and technology programs taught by world-renowned professors and scholars, but also offers high-end learning and research facilities, including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) housed in its Pasadena campus.
