Caltech Sues Apple

Pasadena’s California Institute of Technology has sued Apple Inc. for using Wi-Fi chips that allegedly infringe on four of the university’s patents.

In a lawsuit filed last Thursday, May 26, at the California Central District Court, Caltech argued that Apple has infringed four of its patents for improved data transmission rates and performance. It said the patented technology was used in its major products, from the iPhone 5 forward.

Caltech hopes to block sales of those products and to recover damages from the infringement.

The patents, Caltech said, cover technology implemented in the most recent 802.11n and 802.11ac Wi-Fi standards. The patents were granted between 2006 and 2012.

MacRumors reports that iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch devices use this technology.

Aside from Apple, the lawsuit also named Broadcom which supplies Wi-Fi chips for Apple’s devices, and Avago Technologies Limited. Apple is one of Broadcom’s biggest customers and represents about 14 percent of its revenue.

The suit seeks a jury trial against Apple and Broadcom and a court order that will bar Apple from selling the devices in the U.S. market.

In 2015, Apple was ordered to pay $234 million in damages in a patent-infringement case filed by the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
