Las Encinas Hospital, with a special match grant from the KEBOK Foundation, awarded Rosemary Children’s Services $12,000.00 to help support its Mental Health Services programs. Las Encinas Hospital submitted a proposal to the KEBOK Foundation, on behalf of Rosemary Children’s Services, to further support local, health-related non-profits. The KEBOK Foundation, comprised of the owners of Aurora Behavioral Health hospitals, provided health-related charitable organizations of the hospital’s choosing with matching grants for limited amounts.

“There is a great need to provide quality mental health and family support services to adolescents in Pasadena,” said Jerry Conway, Chief Executive Officer for Aurora Las Encinas Hospital. “Rosemary Children’s Services’ mental health programs and services are in great demand, while financial support for services is challenging during these tough economic times. Rosemary Children’s Services was chosen by Las Encinas Hospital as the recipient of this award because of its long history of caring for the community, which aligns well with Las Encinas history.”

Founded by Dr. James McBride in 1904, Las Encinas Hospital is a California licensed, accredited acute psyhiatric hospital. In 2003, the hospital was purchased by Aurora Behavioral Healthcare, to follow in the path of excellence established by its founders. Las Encinas has 60 medical staff and allied healthcare professionals, 100 nurses, over 300 employees, and 118 beds. Recently, a $100M expansion, including a new 120 bed behavioral health hospital, new medical office buildings, senior independent and assisted living residences was approved by the City of Pasadena. For more information regarding Las Encinas Hospital visit: www.lasencinashospital.com.

Rosemary Children’s Services is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping abused, abandoned and/or neglected children heal from the past and build the self esteem and skills needed to move towards bright, healthy, and happy futures. Founded by the Pasadena Shakespeare Club in 1920, Rosemary Children’s Services has reached thousands of children and their families and provided compassionate and therapeutic support through the Residential Treatment Program, Foster Family and Adoption Agency, Transitional Housing, Non-Public School, Mental Health Services, Intensive Treatment Foster Care Services, and Therapeutic Behavioral Services.

Few realize that Church of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard was a prolific writer of imaginative science fiction short stories in his early career, churning out escapades of mystery and adventure for pulp magazines in the early 1930′s.

The Church of Scientology in Pasadena staged a public old-time radio-style reading of a Hubbard classic, “Battling Bolto” (“Before there was Captain Kirk, there was Bolto”….) on Jan. 14, featuring seasoned actors from the Church’s Golden Age Theater on Hollywood Blvd.

The crowd wasn’t old timers; even in this day of iPhoned teenagers and blue-toothed adults, there is something about the boundless possibilities and excitement of vintage science fiction that is alluring to all ages.

“Well I think the key word here is “imagination”,” said actor Bob Caso, who performed as, well, every character in the cast besides Battling Bolto. “The audience creates their own movie. They’re creating the pictures of the scenes in their minds and I think that harkens back to the radio days. I think it actually makes any young writer or actor out there more creative to think in those terms.”

RF Daley, who directed the show and portrayed Battling Bolto, agrees.

“Oh, audiences love it! We have a very very loyal audience in fact the audience is growing both in different demographics as well as numbers all the time,” he said before the show.

Daley and Caso performed with scripts onstage spotlighted in the darkened Chapel looking and sounding exactly the way radio shows like shows were performed before live audiences in the Golden Age of Radio.

Hubbard started his pulp fiction writing career in Encintas, Calif. but jumped coasts in 1934 to settle where the publishing action was (and is): New York City. His works were so much in demand that at the age of 25 he was named president of the New York Chapter of the American Fiction Guild as he churned out thrillers with titles like “Dead Men Kill” and “The Mad Dog Murder.”

Before the reading, Joni Labaqui, Public Affairs Director for Author Services, Inc., the agent which represents the works of L. Ron Hubbard, said that Hubbard crafted 184 works of fiction which Author Services has dramatized in recordings.

“When we did that project, it was the project of the voice-over industry,” Labaqui said with a laugh. “Jim Dale, who did all the Harry Potters [asked] “How can I be involved?”. Everybody. The voice of Winnie the Pooh .. all the greats!”

In fact, Labaqui says that 250,000 sound effects for used in the recording of the stories.

Her agency also manages the L. Ron Hubbard Golden Age Theater, which is where Hubbard’s stories are routinely staged at 7051 Hollywood Blvd., in Los Angeles. For more information, see www.GoldenAgeTheater.com.

The Pasadena performance saw community leaders, church members and sci-fi lovers in the beautiful chapel for a show that began with song-singing and led into the dramatic reading.

Eden Stein, President of the Church of Scientology of Pasadena, said “We were thrilled to have the opportunity to share Mr. Hubbard’s rich history with our community by Author Services, his literary agency. It’s such a great way to spend one’s afternoon in the arts and science fiction.”

The Pasadena Church of Scientology is located at 35 South Raymond Ave. in Old Pasadena. For more information, call (626) 792-7532 or visit www.scientology-pasadena.org/.
