Day of the Dead or Dia de Los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that celebrates loved ones who have departed. It is a day to pray for the deceased and take the time to remember them. El Patron, a local Mexican restaurant, is upholding this tradition with a celebration on November 2nd.

The celebration will include Aztec Fire Dancers, who will honor the departed with a traditional dance. “They come up into the restaurant and do it here like a smaller dance here in memory of their ancestors,” said Alex of El Patron.

Pictures of customers who have passed will be on display inside El Patron so loved ones and guests can remember these individuals. “We’re celebrating our ancestors as if they are alive, “ explained Alex. This may seem foreign to some but this is a concept that is time honored and beloved in the Mexican culture.

The Day of the Dead also brings out traditional dishes. The most traditional fares such as, sweet bread, mole and arroz con leche. They will also serve a marinated goat birria. Goat may seem like a strange choice but according to Alex, the goat is “a different taste. It’s a lot more tender, it all depends on how you treat it. We marinate it on our sauce…it’s very juicy and tender.”

He acknowledges not a lot of people have had goat and explained that is one of the reasons why they added it to the menu. “Most restaurants make birria. They do it with the beef, beef birria.” But El Patron took tradition to the next level by offering this updated classic. traditional Mexican dishes that will both delight and amaze your taste buds.
