Celebrity doctor and Pasadena native Dr. Drew Pinsky oversaw the donation of over 100 brand new mattresses with the help from the online direct-to-consumer luxury mattress company Leesa at the site of Hillsides’ Youth Moving On program Tuesday in Pasadena — a foster charity which serves youth transitioning from foster care to adulthood.
“Hillsides does an extraordinary job,” said Pinsky. “If we had a thousand of [Hillsides], we would not have the mental health problems we have, we would not have the criminal justice system problems we have–we would have happy, healthy, engaged populations,” added Pinsky.
The Hillsides mattress donation is part of a greater social mission by Leesa which has a three-pronged social impact program that is considered the heart and soul of the company: One-Ten, One-Earth and One-Community.
In particular, as part of its One-Ten program, Leesa donates one mattress for every 10 sold, and to date, has provided more than 18,000 mattresses to nonprofits that serve people seeking refuge from homelessness, domestic risk and human trafficking.
“Our families have a lot of financial struggles and emotional struggles and something as simple as a mattress donation can relieve a lot of stress and help them on a path to a better life,” said Hillsides Executive Vice President and Chief Operation Officer Stacey Roth.
Leesa donated the mattresses in the name of radio and TV personality Dr. Drew Pinsky who hosts the daily KABC radio show, “Dr. Drew Midday Live with Mike Catherwood,” and starred in the hit reality series Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew which chronicled the struggle for sobriety and the cycle of addictive disorders of a group of celebrities among other accolades.
Pinksy is a long-time supporter of Hillsides and his wife Susan Pinksy is a former Hillsides gala chair.
Those receiving mattresses will be families receiving services through Hillsides’ Family Resource Centers, families involved in Hillsides’ Foster Care and Adoptions program run by Hillsides’ affiliate Bienvenidos, and youth living in the Youth Moving On transitional housing program located at 650 N. Oakland.
“The fact that it’s staffed by professionals and they know what works and they know what kids need,” said Pinsky, “they do these sorts of services right. No one is better. They’re a model for how it should be done,” explained Pinsky.
